Kasich Budget to Fund State Airport Improvements

The Kasich Administration has submitted its’ budget through the 2018-2019 Fiscal Year and it has State Aviation officials pleased with the proposed continued funding of State airport improvements along with the benefits those improvements will yield.

The Ohio Aviation Association (OAA) spearheaded the initial drive in 2016 and has strongly supported the continued funding, which now totals $6 million per fiscal year to better reflect contributions made by Ohio’s airports to the state general revenue fund.

In recent years, state funding for airports had hit a record low of $750,000 per fiscal year. In a statement from OAA President, Greg Heaton, “The OAA congratulates the Governor for presenting a draft budget that funds important aviation infrastructure in Ohio. OAA looks forward to working with the Administration and the Legislature to establish effective and perpetual funding levels for the reinvestment into aviation infrastructure to meet the needs of Ohio’s citizens and employers.” This funding will also allow airports to use state funds to leverage additional funding from the FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP.) These funds require a 10% non-federal match.

According to the OAA, Ohio has seen a sharp rise in FAA AIP funding because of increased state funding and the ability of airports to leverage these funds to meet match requirements. This trend will continue with the newly submitted budget, allowing commercial airports to compete for funding and attracting job growth and economic development.

Ohio has more than 100 public use airports that help sustain more than 123,000 jobs and 13.3 billion in economic activity each year. Founded in 1965, the Ohio Aviation Association is a non-profit corporation committed to airport development and safety in Ohio. OAA’s mission is to promote aviation by fostering public recognition and understanding of aviation in Ohio; to promote and encourage better relations between airports, users and communities served; and to cooperate with all organizations working for the general advancement and benefit of aviation.
